Power of Education . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dr. Dan Fredericks

"Education was never meant to eliminate all the questions. The power of education comes in its capacity to point out mystery and wonder, and to keep you coming back to think again in new ways about old ideas."

On Listening . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Top Performance, Vol5, #4

"Listening is different from hearing. Hearing is something you do merely because you have ears attached to the sides of your head. Hearing is something you do physically. Listening is much more involved. Listening is psychological. When you listen, you not only use your ears – you also your mind and heart."

Do More . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . William Arthur Ward

Give Your All - runner arms upraised"Do more than belong, participate.
Do more than care, help.
Do more than believe, practice.
Do more than be fair, be kind.
Do more than forgive, forget.
Do more than dream, work."

Poor Richard’s Almanack . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ben Franklin

"A slip of the foot you may soon recover,
but a slip of the tongue you may never get over."

"Conscience" . . . . . . . . . . . . . Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, THE PRIEST, Sept. 1984

"Conscience…signifies in some way the voice of God within us. It is clear that it is not possible to justify the equation of the individual judgments of conscience with the voice of God. Conscience is not an oracle…

"…conscience is the super-ego, the internalization of the will and the convictions of others who have formed us and have so impressed their will on us that it no longer speaks to us externally, but rather from deep within our inner self.

"In this situation, conscience would not be a real source of morality at all, but only the reflection of the will of another, an alien guide within ourselves.

"…it requires growth, training and practice."

A Loving Relationship . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Leo Buscaglia, Loving Each Other

"A loving relationship is one in which the individuals involved grow in their understanding and loving acceptance of each other’s differences and encourages each person to reach out and share as much beauty and love as is possible to find."

On Courtesy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Donald DeMarco, The Many Faces of Virtue, p. 77

"Courtesy…is the entrance-level virtue that acknowledges that the other human being is worthy of being honored simply because he is a human being. Courtesy may or may not lead to friendship, but it is the first virtue in the catalog of human virtues that one can express to a complete stranger without risk of impropriety.

"Human beings, unlike machines, have an inherent dignity. They need to be reminded of this dignity, less they forget they possess it."

Don’t Envy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anonymous

"Don’t envy the person who gets ahead – study their technique."

"Prayer for the Nation". . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Pres. George Washington,

To the State Governors June 8, 1783

"Almighty God, we make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United states in thy holy Presidents Day - Abe Lincoln and George Washington - February 18, 2019protection, that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government, and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large.

"And finally that thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy nation.

"Grant our supplications, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

America . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Bits & Pieces, Vol. 21, #7

"The idea that America was and is a melting pot was always somewhat of a myth, says former Senator Fred Harris. What we need, the Senator adds, is to accept people who are different; not attempt to make everyone the same. As Bishop Fulton Sheen once said, ‘America is not a melting pot; it is a mosaic.’"

Political Humor . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Will Rogers

"Now most actors appearing on stage have some writer write their material, but I don’t do that; Congress is good enough for me. They have written my material for years and I am not ashamed of the material I have.…You see, there is nothing so funny as something done in all seriousness."

Leaders Retain…. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Bennis & Nanus, Leaders, p. 65

"…leaders seem to retain many of the positive characteristics of the child: enthusiasm for people, spontaneity, imagination, and an unlimited capacity to learn new behavior."

1 Corinthians 13 (A Mother’s Paraphrase) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mrs. Mervin Seashore

"Though I speak with the language of educators and psychiatrists and have not love, I am become as blaring brass or a crashing cymbal.

"And if I have the gift of planning my child’s future and understanding all the mysteries of the child’s mind and have ample knowledge of teenagers, and though I have all faith in my children, so that I could remove their mountains of doubts and fears and have not love, I am nothing.

"And though I bestow all my goods to feed and nourish them properly, and though I give my body to backbreaking housework and have not love, it profits me not.

"The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life." Proverbs 13:14    "Love is patient with the naughty child and is kind. Love does not envy when a child wants to move to Grandma’s house because ‘she is nice.’

"Love is not anxious to impress a teenager with one’s superior knowledge.

"Love has good manners in the home – does not act selfishly or with a martyr-complex, is not easily provoked by normal childish actions.

"Love does not remember the wrongs of yesterday and love thinks no evil – it gives the child the benefit of the doubt.

"Love does not make light of sin in the child’s life (or in one’s own either), but rejoices when he or she comes to a knowledge of the truth.

"Love does not fail. Whether there be comfortable surroundings, they shall fail, whether there be total communication between parents and children, it will cease, whether there be good education, it shall vanish.

"When we were children, we spoke and acted and understood as children, but now that we have become parents, we must act maturely.

"Now abides faith, hope, love – these three are needed in the home. Faith in Jesus Christ, eternal hope for the future of the child, and God’s love shed in our hearts, but the greatest of these is love."

My Difficult Word . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Steve Goodier, LifeSupportSystem.com

An office reports that they have an answering machine that instructs callers to leave their name and address, and to spell any difficult words.

Early one Monday morning when the secretary was reviewing the weekend messages, she heard an enthusiastic young woman recite her name and address and then confidently say, "My difficult word is R-e-c-o-n-c-i-l-i-a-t-i-o-n – reconciliation.

Everyone is a comic! But in another sense, reconciliation is a difficult word. If not difficult to spell, then difficult to carry out. Also difficult is saying, "I’m sorry," or "I forgive you."
