Core Values dart board    "Create the habit of taking action right away. To make anything a habit, you keep doing something many times. The wise person doesn’t wait until a new habit becomes a habit. New Year’s Prayer . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anonymous

"Heavenly Father, for this coming year
Just one request I bring.
I do not pray for happiness or any earthly thing.
Apple Tree: A Year of New BeginningsI do not ask to understand the way you lead me;
But this I ask – teach me to do the thing that pleases You.
I want to know Your guiding voice,
To walk with you each day.
Heavenly Father,
Make me swift to hear and ready to obey;
And thus the year I now begin
A happy year will be,
If I am seeking just to do
The thing that pleases You."

Two Kinds of Light . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . James Thurber

Going for the Gold . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Denis Waitley Priorities, Vol. 3, # 4

    "Self-esteem is a combination of self-worth and self-trust. Self-worth is being glad you are you, with your genes, your body, your background and your potential. Self-trust is the functional belief in your own ability positively and effectively to control what happens to you in a world of uncertainty. The first gives you a feeling of optimism. The second gives you empowerment."

National Morality . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . George Washington

    "Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principles."

Prayer in Daily Life . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Rev. Robert H. Schuller

    "Ask God questions and then, this is very important, listen. Be quiet, be peaceful and wait.

figure listening    Ask, wait, listen. You ask a question, you relax and you wait and you listen. God said, ‘Call upon me and I will answer you.’

    Wait for an answer. Its shocking, you know, how many people say, ‘Hello, how are you?’ and suddenly, they are gone. Never waiting for your answer to their question.

    Many of us are guilty of the same shortcoming in our conversations with God. We do all the talking. We may even ask questions. But how many of us actually expect and wait for God to answer?…Ask questions. Wait and listen."

True Knowledge . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Confucius

    "To know that we know what we know, and that we do not know what we do not know, that is true knowledge."

Apply & Do . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Goethe

Statio . . . . . . . . . . . .Philip Yancey, "Reaching for God," Positive Thinking, 12/2002

    "There is a monastic practice called statio that means, simply, stopping one thing before beginning another. Rather than rushing from one task to the next, pause for a moment and recognize the time between times.…Before reading the Bible, pause and ask for a spirit of attention. Do this often. Do this often enough and even mechanical acts become conscious, mindful"

Life’s New Direction . . . . . . .Anonymous, Sunday Sermon Masterpiece Collection, CD-ROM

    Often we are like the young woman who wanted to point her life in a new direction. She went into a church, took paper and pen, and proceeded to write down a long list of things she was going to do to change her life. She signed the paper, placed it on the altar and then sat down to wait for God’s approval.

    After a time, the voice of God spoke to her inner heart: "You are going about this all wrong. Tear up what you have written."

    Reluctantly, the young woman followed God’s instruction. Then she heard the voice of God speak to her listening heart, "Take a blank sheet of paper and sign your name to it at the bottom. Place it on the altar and I’ll fill it in."

Bring the Candles . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Henry Heintz, Source Unknown

    John F. Kennedy often closed his speeches with the story of Colonel Davenport , the Speaker of the House of Representatives in Connecticut: On May 19th in the 1780 the skies over Hartford darkened ominously, and some of the representative, glancing out the windows, feared the end time were at hand. Quelling a clamor for immediate adjournment, Davenport rose and said, "The Day of Judgment is either approaching, or its is not. If it is not, there is no cause for adjournment. If it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. Therefore, I wish that candles be brought."

    Rather than fearing what is to come, we are to keep the watch till Christ returns. Instead of fearing the dark, we are to be sparks of light, watching and waiting.

Two boys talking: "I made a New Year's resolution to eat broccoli. If I can't stand it, I'll give it up for Lent."
