Re-Examine Convictions . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sydney J. Harris

    "We praise the man who ‘has the courage of his convictions,’ but every bigot and fanatic has that; what is harder and rarer, is to have the courage to re-examine one’s convictions and to reject them if they don’t square with the facts."

Real Champions . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dr. Denis Waitley

    "The real champions in life are so humble and gracious. They just continue doing what they do without all the posturing. If you’ve got the real thing, you don’t have to flaunt a loud imitation."

Wisdom Seeds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . William Arthur Ward

Count your blessings

"Anyone can criticize, condemn and complain;
It takes talent to commend, construct and create."

"Every stream has a source;
Every mountain has a base;
Every deed has a thought."

As a Man Thinketh . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . James Allen, p. 54

    "Achievement, of whatever kind, is the crown of effort, the diadem of thought. By the aid of self-control, resolution, purity, righteousness, and well-directed thought, a man ascends; by the aid of animality, indolence, impurity, corruption, and confusion of thought a man descends.

    A man may rise to high success, and even to lofty altitudes in the spiritual realm, and again descend into weakness and wretchedness by allowing arrogant, selfish and corrupt thoughts to take possession of him."

Make Your Child a Leader . . . . . . . . . . . . . John E. Anderson, Reader’s Digest, July 1993, p. 24

    "Family psychologist John Rosemond…has identified respect, resourcefulness and responsibility as the basic characteristics parents should develop in a child. The mantle of leadership falls on those who try to understand and abide by the rules (respectful), who keep trying, or try new ideas when there’s a setback (resourcefulness) and who face up to the consequences of their actions (responsibility)."

Success & Action . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Conrad Hilton

    "Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit."

Be a Man of Value . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dr. Albert Einstein

"Try not to be a success, but rather try to become a man of value."

The True Athlete . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Coach John Wooden

"The true athlete should have character,
not be a character."

Spirituality of Imperfection . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ernest Kurtz

    "We are not ‘everything,’ but neither are we ‘nothing.’ Spirituality is discovered in that space between paradox’s extremes, for there we confront our helplessness and powerlessness, our woundedness. In seeking to understand our limitations, we seek not only an easing of our pain but an understanding of what it means to hurt and what it means to be healed. Spirituality begins with the acceptance that our fractured being, our imperfection, simply is: There is no one to blame for our errors—neither ourselves now anyone else. Spirituality helps us first to see, and then to understand, and then to accept the imperfection that lies at the very core of our human being. Spirituality accepts that ‘If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly.’"

To Live, Not to Exist . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Jack London

    "I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not spend my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time."

Achievement . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Bits & Pieces, Vol. 20, # 10

"The person who gets ahead is the one who does more than is necessary—
and keeps on doing it."

Use of Reason . . . . . . . . .  . . . . . Allan Bloom The Closing of the American Mind, p. 38

    "Openness used to be the virtue that permitted us to seek the good by using reason. It now means accepting everything and denying reason’s power. The unrestrained and thoughtless pursuit of openness, without recognizing the inherent political, social or cultural problem of openness as the goal of nature, has rendered openness meaningless."

Great People . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ralph Waldo Emerson

    "Great people are they who see that spiritual is stronger than any material force, that thoughts rule the world."

Better than Nothing . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Charles Simmons

    "Give me positive character with positive faith, positive opinions, and positive actions, though frequently in error, rather than a negative character with doubting faith, wavering opinions, undecided actions, and faintness of heart. Something is better than nothing."

Tales of St. Francis . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Murray Bodo, OFM

    "Francis admonished us all saying, ‘My brother, in all the fasting and penance you do for the love of our Lord Jesus Christ, you must always take your own constitution into consideration and give your body what it needs. You must avoid excessive mortification in the same way that you avoid excessive eating and drinking. For it is not the food that is sinful or the lack of food that is virtuous. Rather, it is the excess that leads to sin and moderation that enables you to persevere in penance, and it is true self-knowledge that enables you to know what is excessive and what is prudent in your own particular case.’"

St. Francis of Assisi, "Praise and bless my Lord, and give Him thanks, and serve Him with great humility."

Think & Grow Rich . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Napoleon Hill, p. 31

"[B]urning desire can bring…the opportunity of [the] lifetime."

Real Joy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Wilfred Grenfell

"Real joy comes not from ease or riches or from the praise of others,
but from doing something worthwhile."

Your Line of Work? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anonymous, Sunday Sermon Masterpiece Collection

    A local pastor was pared up with a threesome for a round of golf. He was dressed appropriately for the occasion, leaving his clerical garb in the locker room. One of the threesome spoke first in an attempt to begin a conversation. He inquired, "So what line of work are you in?"

    The pastor teed up his ball, looked up at the fellow and replied, "Horizions."

    Isn’t that a wonderful job description for all genuine disciples of Jesus Christ? The word "horizon" is used to indicate the limits of our vision. The higher we rise, the greater is our vision. The Christ Spirit within us empowers us to rise above the ordinary, thereby broadening our vision. And our limited view is transformed into a new vision of the ever-present, all-encompassing, limitless love of God.

The Gloom of Doom . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Source Unknown

    "It is a gloomy moment in the history of our country. Not in the lifetime of most men has there been so much grave and deep apprehension; never has the future seemed so incalculable as at this time. The domestic economic situation is in chaos. Our dollar is weak throughout the world. Prices are so high as to be utterly impossible. The political cauldron seethes and bubbles with uncertainty. It is a solemn moment of our troubles. No man can see the end."

    Some might agree that this is a true picture of today. However, that was first published in "Harper’s Weekly" in October 1857. It’s a wonder the country has survived all this bad news!
