Teachable Moments . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Michael Josephson, Character Counts

"‘[T]eachable moments often arise unannounced and unnoticed and teachers who want to help their students in a meaningful way have to have faith that, sometimes, what they say and do really matters. The same is true for coaches and for parents.

But since we can’t always know when those ‘sometimes’ occur, we have to act as if everything we say will matter.

If you do that, every once in a while all your efforts will be affirmed when someone gives you the wonderful gift of telling you that you changed his life."

On Wisdom . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Doug Larson

"Wisdom is the quality that keeps you from getting into situations where you need it."

My Mission . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Cardinal Newman

figures celebrating

"God has created me to do Him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission—I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good, I shall do his work. I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place while not intending it—if I do but keep His commandments."

Reverence for Life . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dr. Albert Schweitzer

"If a person loses reverence for any part of life, he or she will lose reverence for all life."

Accept Changes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Fr. Brian Cavanaugh, TOR

"Accept changes in your life and in the world around you, don’t resist. Change is constant and eventual, that’s a guarantee. Things, whatever they may be, will change. Expect it, accept change because if you don’t, you won’t. Change will happen, but you won’t."

Better to Hope . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Wolfgang Goethe

"We always hope; and in all things it is better to hope than to despair.
When we return to real trust in God, there will no longer be room in our soul for fear."

Think & Grow Rich . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Napoleon Hill, p. 18

"One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when one is overtaken by temporary defeat."

Capable of Growth . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Source Unknown

Pearl S. Buck observed that "we learn as much from sorrow as from joy, as much from illness as from health, as much from handicap as from advantage—and, indeed, perhaps more."…

"Suffering and pain and confusion are realities in the lives of us all—but in learning to cope without losing hope, in learning from those realities and accepting the lessons learned in humility and patience, we become capable of growth, re-creation, transformation—and resurrection."

Compose Your Life . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Montaigne, The Practical Cogitator, p.85

"If you have known how to compose your life, you have accomplished a great deal more than the man who knows how to compose a book."

As a Man Thinketh . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . James Allen, p. 44

"To put away aimlessness and weakness, and to begin to think with purpose, is to enter the ranks of those strong ones who only recognize failure as one of the pathways to attainment; who make all conditions serve them, and who think strongly, attempt fearlessly, and accomplish masterfully."

The Dreaded Task . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Margaret E. Brown, A New Day, Salesian Missions

"I found the task that I had dreaded so
Was not so difficult when once begun;
It was the dread itself that was the foe,
And dread once conquered means a victory won."

Discover Wisdom . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Marcel Proust

"We don’t receive wisdom; we must discover it for ourselves after a journey that no one can take for us or spare us."

Real Success . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . William Arthur Ward

"A real success is one who makes his mark in life without smearing others."

Reverencing Creation . . . . . . . . . Michael J. Hines, "The Sacrament of Creation," Commonweal, 1/20/90

"The saints, to use Jonathan Edward’s term (Treatise on Religious Affections), see reality differently from the unconverted. They do not see things that others do not see; rather, they see what everyone else sees but in a different way. They see everything in its relation to God: they see it as creature.

The discovery that every creature, including oneself, is a sacrament of the love of God that causes all things to be provides the deepest foundation for reverencing creation."

People Who Cheat . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anonymous

"People who cheat in life sometimes cheat at golf. But people who cheat at golf always cheat in life."

We Need Men… . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dr. Bill Denton, CrossTies Devotionals, p.1

from the heart

"We need some big men.…We need men, especially in the church, who are big. We need men whose faith is big, whose minds are big enough to think through the complicated problems to help us understand God’s solutions. We need men whose hearts are big, not stifled and stilted. We need men big enough to love, compassionate enough to act, and secure enough to risk what it takes to help those who hurt. We need men who are big on action instead of absent or unseen."

Life’s Harvest . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dr. Denis Waitley

"If you’re hoping to harvest a life of great deeds, remember you first have to plant some great seeds."

True Happiness . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Benjamin Franklin, Positive Press

"One’s true happiness depends more upon one’s own judgment of one’s self, on a consciousness of rectitude in action and intention, and in the approbation of those few who judge impartially, than upon the applause of the unthinking, undiscerning multitude, who are apt to cry ‘Hosanna’ today; tomorrow ‘Crucify’ him."

My Responsibility to God . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Carl G. Johnson

"At one time, Daniel Webster was considered the greatest of all living Americans. He was outstanding as a statesman, lawyer, orator and leader. Twenty-five national leaders attended a select banquet in his honor. One man at the banquet asked Mr. Webster, ‘Sir, what is the greatest thought that ever entered your mind?’

Without hesitation, Webster replied, ‘The greatest thought that ever entered my mind was the thought of my responsibility to God.’ As he spoke, he wept, excused himself from the banquet, and went outside to regain control of his emotions. When he returned, he talked for thirty minutes about each person’s responsibility to God—to heed His call, ‘Follow me!’"

Shoulder Someone’s Burden . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anonymous

Dr. Albert Schweitzer was one of the most famous missionaries of the modern era. Leaving behind both an academic career (he had a Ph.D. in both theology and physics) and a concert career (he was also a renowned concert organist) he set up a medical clinic in French Equatorial Africa.

When he was 85 years old Schweitzer and some others were walking up a hill. It was extremely hot. Suddenly Schweitzer walked away from the group and made his way toward an African woman struggling up the hill with a large load of wood from the woman and carried it up the hill for her.

When he rejoined the group one of them asked why, in view of his age, he did things like that. Schweitzer looked at the group, then pointed to the woman and said, "No one should ever have to carry a burden like that alone."
