Great Purposes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Orison Sweet Marden
"No man can hope to accomplish anything great in this world until he throws his whole soul, flings the force of his whole life, into it.
It is not enough simply to have a general desire to accomplish something. There is but one way to do that; and that is, to try to be somebody with all the concentrated energy we can muster.
Any kind of human being can wish for a thing, can desire it; but only strong vigorous minds with great purposes can do things."
Enough for One’s Life . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . T.S. Eliot
"To do the useful thing, to say the courageous thing, to contemplate the beautiful thing: that is enough for one man’s life."
Goal of Education . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
"Education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society.…We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education."
Post-Christmas Prayer
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . CONNECTIONS, Jan.1, ‘95"Long after the angels disappear into the heavens, the shepherds return to their flocks, the magi journey home and the great star sets, Jesus remains.
The Child in whom we rediscover God’s great love for humanity becomes the adult Redeemer who challenges us to imitate his selflessness and compassion in order that we might transform our world in love…
May we allow the miracle of Christmas to continue long after the holiday trappings have been packed away;
May we welcome the adult Messiah and his challenging Gospel to recreate our lives, making the peace, justice and hope of this holy season a reality in every season of the new year."
A New Year . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . William Arthur Ward
"Another fresh new year is here…
Another year to live!
To banish worry, doubt, and fear,
To love and laugh and give! This bright new year is given me
To live each day with zest…
To daily grow and try to be
My highest and my best!I have the opportunity
Once more to right some wrongs,
To pray for peace, to plant a tree,
And sing more joyful songs!"
Think/Act Anew . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Abraham Lincoln
"The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew."
Think & Grow Rich . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Napoleon Hill,
p. 38"If the thing you wish to do is right and you believe in it, go ahead and do it! Put your dream across, and never mind what ‘they’ say if you meet with temporary defeat, for ‘they,’ perhaps, do not know that every failure brings with it the seed of an equivalent success."
Life is Now . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Charles Macomb Flandrau
"It is good for one to appreciate that life is now. Whatever it offers, little or much, life is now–this day–this hour–and it is probably the only experience of the kind one is to have."
As a Man Thinketh . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . James Allen,
p. 61"Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your Vision is the promise of what you shall one day be; your Ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil. Dreams are the seedlings of realities."
On Success . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Coach John Wooden,
They Call Me Coach, p. 86
"Success is peace of mind
which is a direct result of
Self-satisfaction in knowing you
did your best to become the
Best you are capable of becoming."
Kindness Near Home . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Chinese proverb
"Better do a kindness near home than go far away to burn incense."
Wisdom from Failure . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Samuel Smiles
"We learn wisdom from failure much more than from success; we often discover what will do by finding out what will not do; and probably he who never made a mistake never made a discovery."
Parents . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Robert MacNeil,
Wordstruck"Parents can plant magic in a child’s mind through certain words spoken with some thrilling quality of voice, some uplift of the heart and spirit."
What You Learn . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Prof. Jacob Neusner
"Much that you learn today won’t be true five years from now; many things you haven’t heard today will be important five or ten years ahead. If I teach you something supposedly ‘relevant,’ I’m guaranteeing irrelevance.
If I teach you how to work, to have good attitudes, to take responsibility for your own ideas, to communicate and to think a problem through, no matter what subject matter I use in order to get those basic skills of mind and intellect across, then I’m giving you something you can use for a very long time. Those skills will never change."
Action Springs . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dietrich Bonhoeffer
"Action springs not from thought, but from a readiness for responsibility."
Sizzle with Zeal . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Charles Fillmore
"I fairly sizzle with zeal and enthusiasm and spring forth with a mighty faith to do the things that ought to be done by me."
Look for the Gold . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Source Unknown
At one time Andrew Carnegie was the wealthiest man in America. He came to America from his native Scotland when he was a small boy, did a variety of odd jobs, and eventually ended up as the largest steel manufacturer in the United States (U.S. Steel). At one time he had forty-three millionaires working for him. In those days a millionaire was a rare person; conservatively speaking, a million dollars in those days would be equivalent to at least twenty million dollars today.
One reporter asked Carnegie how he come to hire forty-three millionaires. Carnegie responded, you got to remember that those men had not been millionaires when they started working for him but had become millionaires only as a result.
The reporter’s next question was, "Well, how did you develop these men to become so valuable to you that you paid them that much money?" Carnegie replied that people are developed the same way gold is mined. When gold is mined, several tons of dirt and stone must be moved first to get an ounce of gold; but one doesn’t go into the mine looking for dirt—one goes in looking for gold.
That’s exactly the way managers need to view people. Don’t look for the flaws, warts, and blemishes. Look for the gold, not the dirt; the good, not the bad. Look for the positive aspects of life. Like everything else, the more good qualities we look for in our people, the more good qualities we are going to find.
To Live and Serve . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Lucia Godwin,
LIVING FAITH, Feb. 26, 1992"I have this day to serve the lord and God’s children. In this day I will encounter persons and situations that are not chosen by me. I may not prefer all the day’s experiences, but it is in this day, and this day only, that I can live and serve.
Yesterday is no more. For good or ill, its actions and thoughts have come and gone. Tomorrow is not yet here. Today, I will guard against dwelling on the yesterdays and tomorrows of my life. Someone may say, ‘Don’t you believe in planning and preparation?’ And I will answer, ‘Yes. I believe in God’s plan. I prepare for God’s life.’
Although I may walk the same old paths of yesterday, I look to them with a newness of heart. I seek the way Jesus chooses for me to serve him and my brothers and sisters. And if the morrow comes, I begin afresh, looking to God’s adventure for the day."
