An Inhabited Garden . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Goethe

"The world is so empty if one thinks only of mountains, rivers and cities; but to know someone here and there who thinks and feels with us, and who, though distant, is close to us in spirit, this makes the earth an inhabited garden."

Achieve More . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Henry Drummond

"Unless a man or woman undertakes more than he or she can possibly do,
he or she will never do all that an individual can do."

Pray for Peace

Good Communication . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Jim Rohn, www.jimrohn.com

"You cannot speak that which you do not know. You cannot share that which you do not feel. You cannot translate that which you do not have. And you cannot give that which you do not possess. To give it and to share it, and for it to be effective, you first need to have it. Good communication starts with good preparation."

Wisdom Seeds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . William Arthur Ward

"Flying off the handle sometimes causes hammers and humans to lose their heads, as well as their effectiveness."

Group Commitment . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . M. Scott Peck, A World Waiting To Be Born, p. 276

"When a group does make a commitment…members transcend their narcissism, coming not only to respect but to appreciate their differences. Long-buried resentments are surfaced and resolved. Enemies are reconciled. Hard eyes become soft, and swords become feathers."

Guts to Ask . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Barbara De Angelis, The Aladdin Factor, p. 64

"You can’t ask for what you want unless you know what it is. A lot of people don’t know what they want or they want much less than they deserve. First, you have to figure out what you want. Second, you have to decide that you deserve it. Third, you have to believe you can get it. And, fourth, you have to have the guts to ask for it."

Look for Circumstances . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . George Bernard Shaw

"People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, they make them."

Plan of Self-Improvement . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Patrick White

"Few people of attainments take easily to a plan of self-improvement. Some discover very easily their perfection cannot endure the insult. Others find their intellectual pleasure lies in the theory, not in the practice. Only a few stubborn ones will blunder on, painfully, out of the luxuriant world of their pretensions into the desert of mortification and reward."

Out of Prayer . . . . . . . . .  .. . Patrick J. Burke, O.P., Spirituality Today via CATHOLIC DIGEST, May `91, p. 48

"All prayer is a surrendering to the word of God, allowing it to penetrate our inmost being, ‘melting and molding’ us into the image of Christ. It is a listening, a seeking, a place of hunger and thirst, and yet also a place of joy and fulfillment. Out of our prayer comes the strength to act, to play our part in the struggle to bring about the kingdom of God."

G.K.’s Wisdom . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . G.K. Chesterton

"There is no such thing on earth as an uninteresting subject;
the only thing that can exist is an uninterested person."

Good Thoughts . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Bishop Fulton J. Sheen

"The mind is like a clock that is constantly running down; it has to be wound up daily with good thoughts."

One Great Truth . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Lyndon B. Johnson, Bits & Pieces, Vol. 20, # 12, p. 1

"At the desk where I sit, I have learned one great truth. The answer for all our national problems—the answer for all the problems of the world—comes in a single word. That word is education."

On Criticism . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Addison

Veterans Day - November 11

"It is ridiculous for anyone to criticize the works of another if he or she has not distinguished oneself by one’s own performances."

Work of Fulfillment . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Phillips Brooks

"The greatness of the work of the fulfiller, as compared with the work of the destroyer, is indicated by the faculties and qualities which it requires. Destruction calls for nothing but hatred and vigor. Fulfillment calls for sympathy, intelligence, patience and hope."

Perspective of Change . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Daily Words, Aug. `90, p.24

"Changes are important to and expected in a life of progress and growth. Whether changes enrich my life or hinder me will depend on my perspective of change itself, on my ability to go through change, and on my awareness of God’s presence and power in my life."

Taste and see that the Lord is good -- Psalm 34:8

Find One’s Soul . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Chaim Potock, The Chosen

"One learns of the pain of others by suffering one’s own pain, by turning inside oneself, by finding one’s own soul. It is important to know of pain. It destroys our self-pride, our arrogance, our indifference toward others."

Science of Self-Discipline . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Kerry Johnson

"If your self-discipline were equal to your dreams, you could do just about anything."

Virtue of the Brave . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mahatma Gandhi

"Forgiveness is the virtue of the brave. He alone is strong enough to avenge a wrong, who knows how to love and forgive."

On Courage . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Courage is an inner resolution to go forward despite obstacles; cowardice is submissive surrender to circumstances. Courage breeds creative self-affirmation; cowardice produces destructive self-abnegation. Courage faces fear and masters it; cowardice represses fear and is mastered by it."

Character is Shaped . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Helen Keller, Winning Words of Champions, p. 36

"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved. Silver is purified in fire and so are we. It is in the most trying times that our real character is shaped and revealed."

Show Up to Vote . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anthony De Mello, SJ

Vote

On voting day the Master would always be the first to show up at the polling booth.

He could never understand why some of the disciples failed to exercise their right to vote.

"People are ready to pay their taxes and shed their blood for democracy," he said. "Why will they not take the trouble to vote and make it work."

Realize the Blessings . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anonymous

Statue of Liberty    A Marine Colonel was waiting for a flight from Sarajevo to Vienna. He found himself in a conversation with a gentleman named Peter who was departing Sarajevo after gathering research for a book he was writing. Peter pointed to the United States passport, and said, "Do you know what that is worth?"

"I’m afraid I don’t understand," replied the Marine Colonel.

"Of course, forgive me, I forgot." Peter said, "You Americans do not realize the blessings you have. So many in this world envy you, and you do not know what you have." He continued, "You see, freedom is what these people cherish. It is such a dream for many. Here, as is the case in many countries, families are willing to send their young away to freedom, in spite of the pain. You Americans are a lighthouse beacon for freedom, and I wonder if you realize this."
