Searching for Wisdom . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Faith Today, 5/16/85

"Some wisdom is a gift. But part of wisdom can be learned.

It also takes a certain amount of life experience to become wise, although aging does not necessarily imply wisdom."

Meaning & Purpose . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mitch Albom,
                                                                                                                           Tuesdays with Morrie, LifeSupportSystem

Morrie Schwartz, an irrepressible lover of life, says this: "So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half asleep even when they are busy doing things they think are important. This is the product of chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning."

Two Great Days . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . William Barclay

"There are two great days in a person’s life—the day we are born and the day we discover why."

A Rich Spiritual Life . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Christophers News Notes, Nov. ‘87

"There are three things to remember in order to live a rich spiritual life: cling to God, think of others and don’t put yourself down. If you spend more energy thinking about the fact that God is Unchanging Love instead of finding fault with yourself, you’ll be much more joyful."

Good Manners . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Zig Ziglar

"Today, we too rarely practice good manners…When we neglect to require our children to say thank you when someone gives them a gift or does something for them, we are raising ungrateful children who are highly unlikely to be happy. Without gratitude, happiness is a rare thing. With gratitude, the odds go up dramatically that happiness will be the result."

Enrich Your Life . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Aunt Pearl, (103 years young), LifeSupportSystem

"Enrich your life by becoming a better person, a better student and an individual worthy of trust and faithful in your commitments. Aspire to help and not hinder in all your good and worthy undertakings. Use these words often: ‘thank you,’ ‘please,’ ‘I’m sorry.’ After living 100 years, I admonish you to think deeply, speak gently, work hard, give freely, pay promptly, pray earnestly and be kind."

True Glory . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Pliny the Elder

"True glory consists in doing what deserves to be written; in writing what deserves to be read, and in so living as to make the world happier and better for our living in it."

Self-Imposed Immaturity . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Immanuel Kant, www.quoted-printable.com

"Enlightenment is man’s emergence from his self-imposed immaturity. Immaturity is the inability to use one’s understanding without guidance from another. This immaturity is self-imposed when its cause lies not in lack of understanding, but in the lack of resolve and courage to use it without guidance from another. Have courage to use your own understanding!"

Personal Integrity . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Buckminster Fuller

"On personal integrity hangs humanity’s fate."

Too Much Caution . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Og Mandino, The Choice

"So many of us think ourselves into smallness, into inferiority, by thinking downward. We are held back by too much caution. We are timid about venturing. We are not bold enough. And so we die before we reach middle age, although we will not be lowered into the ground until we pass three score and ten.
What happened to the grand dreams of our youth? They were struck down by our own caution, our own lack of faith in ourselves and our own abilities. Opportunities? There were many. But always there was risk. Do we dare?

We vacillate. Time hurries by. Opportunity gone. We anguish. The years roll on. Finally, we convince ourselves that it’s too late and settle for cheap imitations of life. We envy the achievers. How lucky they are.

I choose a better way to live!"

"Cherish your yesterdays;
Dream your tomorrows;
But live your todays."

Christian Values . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Zachary Hayes, O.F.M.,

Spirit and Life, Vol. 2, 1992, p.102

"From the time of Francis himself, Franciscan thought has been convinced that ‘example speaks more eloquently than words.’ In terms of education, this means that it is not sufficient merely to discuss Christian values in a theoretical way. On the contrary, the experience of lived Christian values is a primary concern."

Do Something Beyond . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anonymous

"Unless you try to do something beyond what you have mastered, you will never grow."

Did You Know… . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anonymous

"Did you know—silent and listen are spelled with the same letter!"

Character Developed . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Helen Keller

"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved."

Aware of Something . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anonymous

A mother was helping her son with is spelling assignment and came to the words conscious and conscience. When she asked him if he knew the difference between the two words, he responded, "Why sure, Mom, conscious is when you are aware of something and conscience is when you wish you were not."

Servant Leaders . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .M. Scott Peck, A World Waiting To Be Born, p. 260

"We arrive at the great paradox of power: the only civil reason to seek power is to lose it, to give it away. The one mark, above all else, of the true servant leader is that he/she empowers others…Use your power to seek and find people with a potential to lead even greater than your own, nurture their potential with all you’ve got, and then get out of the way."

Resistance to Change . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Source Unknown

Have you ever met someone who was resistant to change, or in need of a new paradigm? Consider this letter written to then President Jackson, dated January 31, 1829: "The canal system of this country is being threatened by the spread of a new form of transportation known as railroads. The federal government must preserve the canals for the following reasons.

"One, if boats are supplanted by railroads, serious unemployment will result. Captains, cooks, drivers, hostlers, repairmen and lock tenders will be left without means of livelihood; not to mention the numerous farmers now employed in growing hay for horses.

"Two, boat builders would suffer, and towline, whip and harness makers would be left destitute.

"Three, canal boats are absolutely essential to the defense of the United States. In the event of the expected trouble with England, the Erie Canal would be the only means by which we could ever move supplies so vital to waging modern war.

"As you may well know, Mr. President, railroad carriages are pulled at the enormous speed of 15 miles per hour by engines, which, in addition to endangering life and limb of passengers, roar and snort their way through the countryside, setting fire to crops, scaring the livestock, and frightening women and children. The Almighty certainly never intended that people should travel at such breakneck speeds."

Sincerely yours,
Martin Van Buren
Governor of New York
