Called To Heal . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . St. Francis of Assisi
We have been called to heal wounds,
to unite what has fallen apart,
and to bring home those who have lost their way.
Until One is Committed . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Wolfgang Goethe, via Positive Press
Until one is committed, there is always hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one element of truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plansthat moment one commits oneself, then providence moves all.
I Didnt Speak Up . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . attributed to Martin Niemoeller
In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didnt speak up because I wasnt a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didnt speak up because I wasnt a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didnt speak up because I wasnt a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didnt speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up.
Nurtured by Love . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dr. Shinichi Suzuki
Where love is deep much can be accomplished.
We Wait So Long . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . via Motivational-Messages.com
The tragedy of life is not that it ends so soon, but that we wait so long to begin it.
A Place of Education . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Fr. Brian Cavanaugh, TOR
John Cardinal Newman describes a place of education: An assemblage of learned men, zealous for their own sciences, and rivals of each other, are brought, by familiar intercourse and for the sake of intellectual peace, to adjust together the aims and relations of their respective subjects of investigation. They learn to respect, to consult, to aid each other.
Might we say then that a faculty is a group of learned men and women, who are zealous in their respective fields, and that, admittedly, they are rivals, but they come together for the sake of intellectual peace and adjust together. In addition, they respect each other, they consult and assist one another? I hope that the faculty of our colleges and universities learn to respect one another, to consult and to aid each other. To this end we must strive.
On Wisdom . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . T.S. Eliot, via INSPIRE
Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?
Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?
Principle to Follow . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Theodore Roosevelt
In life, as in a football game, the principle to follow is: Hit the line hard; dont foul and dont shirk, but hit the line hard.
Messenger of the Heart . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Angelus Silesius
You wander far afield, think you must roam the earth
instead of diving deep into yourself to find your real worth.Nothing keeps you bound except your Me
until you break its chains, its handcuffs and are free.If you dare call Him Father and live in this reality,
you must become a new born child and overcome duality.
Prayer Helps . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . William Arthur Ward
Prayer helps us to respond to misfortune with courage, to react with confidence and to rebound with enthusiasm.
On Character . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mary H. Waldrip
It is important that people know what you stand for. It is equally important that they know what you wont stand for.
Here for a Reason . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Whoopie Goldberg
I fear waking up one morning and finding out my life was all for nothing. Were here for a reason. I believe a bit of the reason is to throw little torches out to lead people through the dark. When youre kind to someone in trouble, you hope they remember and are kind to someone else and so on. Soon it will be like a wildfire.
Ask Ourselves . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Henri Nouwen, CATHOLIC DIGEST, May 1993
When we honestly ask ourselves which persons in our lives mean the most to us, we often find it is those who, instead of giving much advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a gentle and tender hand.
In Giving, Not Getting . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Henry Ford
Success is not rare. It is common. It is not a matter of luck or of contesting, for certainly no success can come from preventing the success of another. It is a matter of adjusting ones efforts to overcome obstacles and ones abilities to give the services needed by others. There is no other possible success. Most people think of it in terms of getting; success, however, begins in terms of giving.
The Primary Aim . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Michael Gerber
Live your life as if it were importanttake yourself seriously. Create your life intentionally; actively make it what you wish it to be.
On Music . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Leonard Bernstein
Music can name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable.
Communications is at the Heart . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Nido Quebin,
How To Be A Master Communicator, Insight, # 85Communication is at the heart of everything we do. We cant live without it. Communication is the foundation for interaction between human beings. Communications have to do with meanings, with understandings, with feelings, with desires, with needs and with ideas. Our world is filled with information. But the greatest need is for understandingfor building bridges between human beings so we can better live together and work together and get along with each other.
It is Wiser . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . SOUNDINGS, Vol. 4, # 12
It is wiser to lead than to drive; wiser to pull than to push; wiser to ask than to demand; wiser to suggest than to insist; wiser to inspire than to compel; and wiser to motivate than to manipulate.
St. Francis & the Novice . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anonymous, from The Sowers Seeds, # 8
Consider the case of the novice who wanted to possess a copy of the psalter. He desired to pray the psalms more often and meditate on them in the course of the day. But Francis was reluctant to give him permission. Francis said, After you have a psalter, you will desire a breviary. Then you will sit in your chair, like a great prelate, and say to your brother, bring me my breviary.
When the novice still did not get the point Francis said, My dear friend, in the past we had great heroes and warriors and many famous knights. They endured great trials and faced bitter hardships. Nowadays some bards go around who try to obtain honor, not by doing what these great men have done, but by singing about them. This may also be your temptation. Once you start reading books and talking about them, you will put your confidence in knowledge and not in virtuous deeds.
Footballs Good Samaritan . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anonymous
A football coach was talking to his little boy about the afternoons game while they were on their way home. If Id just had a good blocking back in today game, the father said, we wouldnt have lost todays game.
Dad, when I grow up Ill be your blocking back, the youngster asserted. But uh, Dad whats a blocking back?
Son, said the father, a blocking back is somebody who will do the work and not worry about who gets the credit for the touchdown.
And there are many openings for this position!
