Goal of Education . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically…Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of education."

An Act of God . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Philip Bailey

"Let each person think oneself an act of God
Your mind, your thoughts, your life a breath of God;
And let each individual try, by great thoughts and good deeds
To show the most of heaven you have in you."

"Let heaven and earth praise Him." Psalm 69

Friendship . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Cathy Liebhart, FAITH TODAY, July 1985

"Paula Ripple said friendship can be looked upon as ‘a relationship between two people which nourishes the life of each person at the expense of neither.’

It is not a ‘blending’ of two people, not a ‘giving away’ of oneself. Crucial to healthy friendships are people who have a strong sense of their own self-worth, who recognize some of the gifts they possess.

‘If I don’t know who I am and what my gifts are, I don’t have anything to give in friendship.’ But through friendship, the knowledge we have of ourselves is deepened, expanded or challenged. A friend ‘frees the best in us and confirms our own beliefs about what is best in us,’ Ripple said.

A friend will not allow us ‘to settle for less in ourselves’ then we are or can become."

Today’s Roses . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . William Arthur Ward

"The wise person has learned that today’s roses are far more fragrant than yesterday’s faded laurels."

Tap Hidden Reserves  . . . . . . . . . . . . Harold S. Kushner, Bits & Pieces, Oct. 18, 1990

"People who pray for miracles usually don’t get miracles…But people who pray for courage, for strength to bear the unbearable, for the grace to remember what they have left instead of what they have lost, very often find their prayers answered.…Their prayers helped them to tap hidden reserves of faith and courage which were not available to them before."

Stories & Symbols . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Tom Peters

"The best leaders…almost without exception, and at every level, are master users of stories and symbols."

Your Acquaintances . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Napoleon Hill, Think & Grow Rich, p. 283

"Who among your acquaintances: Encourages you most? Cautions you most? Discourages you most?

Study the questions carefully, come back to them…and be astounded at the amount of additional knowledge of great value to yourself you will have gained…"

A Great Paradox . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Speaker’s Resource, Vol. 10, # 4, 216

"Social scientists are asking us to take notice that as our technological resources increase, our sense of community decreases.

A great paradox of our time is that while technology offers us instant communication, we use it to isolate ourselves from each other. We face a world without insight into the social nature of man."

The More Difficult . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Benjamin Franklin

"Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment."

Depths of Life . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ralph Waldo Emerson

"According to the depth from which you draw your life, such is the depth of your accomplishment, manners and presence."

20 Years From Barbarism . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Albert Siegel, Stanford Observer.

"When it comes to rearing children, every society is only twenty years away from barbarism. Twenty years is all we have to accomplish the task of civilizing the infants who are born into our midst each year. These savages know nothing of our language, culture, God, religion, values, or customs. The infant is totally ignorant about democracy, civil liberties, respect, tolerance of others, decency, and honesty. The barbarian must be tamed if civilization is to survive."

Time . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Lord Chesterfield

"Take care of the minutes, for the hours will take care of themselves."

We’re Here for a Reason . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Whoopie Goldberg, PARADE Magazine

"I fear waking up one morning and finding out my life was all for nothing. We’re here for a reason. I believe a bit of the reason is to throw little torches out to lead people through the dark. When you are kind to someone in trouble, you hope they remember and are kind to someone else and so on. Soon it’ll be like a wildfire."

Wisdom . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Pope John XXIII

"See everything, overlook a great deal, correct a little."

Act into a New Way . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ernest Kurtz, The Spirituality of Imperfection, p. 80

"We act ourselves into a new way of thinking."

To Believe . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Fr. John Powell, S.J., A Life-Giving Vision, p. 8

"To believe. Having learned to transcend purely self-directed concern, fully alive people discover ‘meaning’ in their lives. This meaning is found in what Frankl calls ‘a specific vocation or mission in life.’…This faith commitment shapes the lives of fully alive individuals, making all of their efforts seem significant and worthwhile. Devotion to this life task raises them above the pettiness and paltriness that necessarily devour meaningless lives."

Youth . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anonymous

"You are only young once but you can stay immature indefinitely."

Your Destiny . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dag Hammarskjöld

"Do not look back. And do not dream about the future, either. It will neither give you back the past, nor satisfy your other daydreams. Your duty, your reward—your destiny—are here and now."

Buried Treasure . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Aesop

A farmer, on his deathbed, summoned his sons and told them he was leaving his farm to them in four equal parts. "I have very little cash equity, but you will find that the greater part of my wealth is buried somewhere in the ground, about a foot and a half beneath the surface. But I’ve forgotten precisely where." He died soon after.

The four sons set to work on the fields and dug up every inch of them, searching for the treasure their father said was buried in the ground. However, they found nothing. Still they decided that as long as they dug up all the ground, they might as well sow a crop and reap a good harvest.

That autumn, after a profitable harvest, the four brothers again began digging in search of the buried treasure; as a consequence their farmland was turned over more thoroughly than any other farm in the area. And of course, again they reaped an abundant harvest. After they had repeated this procedure for several more years, the four sons finally realized what their father meant when he told them that his wealth was buried in the ground.

Psalm 67, "God, our God, has blessed us."

Politeness—Hot Air . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anthony de Mello, SJ, One Minute Nonsense, p. 50

The master was certainly not a stickler for etiquette and good manners but there was always a natural courtesy and grace in his dealings with others.

A young disciple once was very rude to a toll collector as he drove the Master home one night. In self-defense he said, "I’d rather be myself and let people know exactly how I feel. Politeness is nothing but a lot of hot air anyway."

"True enough," replied the Master pleasantly, "but that’s what we have in our automobile tires and see how it eases the bumps."
